BGB detains hundi trader suspect

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested a suspected hundi trader with Tk 4.5 lakhs at Putkhali Mosjidbari area of Jessore district on Thursday evening. The arrested was identified as Firoz Ahmed, 19, son of Abdul Lotif, a resident of Putkhali area of Sharsha Upazila. Subedar Abul Hossain, company commander of Putkhali Camp, said BGB men conducted a drive at Putkhali acting on secret information that Firoz Mahmud was smuggling huge amount of money through hundi. During the drive, the BGB members arrested Firoz from Putkhali Mosjidbari area and confiscated the money after searching his body. Later, Firoz was handed over to Benapole Port Police Station; according to UNB.....

Asian shares meander

Asian shares were mixed Friday in muted trading after the European Central Bank announced no changes to its stimulus policies.  Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 slipped 0.2 per cent to 20,109.57 while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.2 per cent to 5,750.70. South Korea's Kospi rose 0.2 per cent to 2,446.86.  Hong Kong's Hang Seng lost 0.2 per cent to 26,702.84. The Shanghai Composite slipped 0.2 per cent at 3,249.90. The S&P 500 index slipped at the finish, losing 0.38 points to 2,473.45. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 28.97 points, or 0.1 per cent to 21,611.78.  The Nasdaq composite rose 0.1 per cent to a record high of 6,390.  Benchmark US crude gained 3 cents to $46.95 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. It lost 40 cents on Thursday, to $46.92.  Brent crude, the standard for international oil prices, rose 5 cents to $49.35 a barrel in London. The dollar edged down to 111.97 yen from 112.12 yen. The euro jumped to $ 1.1629 from $1.1507, according to AP.....

BD tourists in India jump by 40pc in Jan-June

Bangladeshi tourist arrival in India jumped by 40 per cent in the first half of the current calendar year, according to the latest statistics of Indian tourism ministry. The estimate showed that some 0.90 million Bangladeshi tourists visited India in January-June period of 2017 while the number was 0.64 million in the same period of 2016. During the first half of this year, total foreign tourist arrival in India stood at 4.88 million while the number was around 4.17 million in the same period of the past year.  Bangladesh accounted for 18.55 per cent of all tourists who visited India in the first six months of the current calendar year.   ....

Fire at DU VC’s residence

A fire broke out at the residence of Dhaka University Vice Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique on Friday morning. The fire originated from an electric short circuit around 9:10am, said Ziaur Rahman, a telephone operator at Fire Service and Civil Defence control room, reports UNB. Oil prices hover below $50 level

Oil prices were little changed on Friday ahead of a key meeting of major oil producing nations next week, sitting below the $50 per barrel level. International benchmark Brent crude futures LCOc1 were down just 1 cent at $49.29 per barrel by 0213 GMT. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures CLc1 were at $46.91 per barrel, also down 1 cent. During the previous trading session both benchmarks rose to their highest levels since early June in choppy trading, having been pushed higher by data showing US crude and fuel inventories fell sharply last week. Despite the drop, US oil stocks, at roughly 490 million barrels, remain well above the five-year average, while US production C-OUT-T-EIA has increased almost 12 per cent since mid-2016 to 9.4 million bpd. An abundance of global crude supplies has put pressure on oil prices and key members of the OPEC are scheduled to meet non-members in St Petersburg, Russia, on Monday. OPEC, together with some non-members like Russia, has pledged to reduce the global glut with a 1.8 million-barrel per day (bpd) production cut between January this year and March 2018, reports Reuters.....
