HC clears way for Moudud\'s graft case trial
The High Court (HC) rejected on Tuesday BNP leader Barrister Moudud Ahmed's petition challenging the legality of framing charges in a graft case against him, report agencies. "The High Court through this order has cleared the way for continuing the trial proceedings," said Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) counsel Khurshid Alam Khan. The HC, however, ordered the authorities concerned to change the court for holding the trial of the case filed by ACC against Moudud. An HC division bench of Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice Krishna Debnath rejected the petition and passed the order. The ACC filed the case against Moudud Ahmed on September 16 in 2007 for possessing wealth of Tk around 70 million beyond his known sources of income and concealing information about his assets of Tk about 44 million.....

The downpour that continued in the past three days influenced by a low coupled with pick monsoon may decrease from Tuesday, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD). The rainfall in last few days resulted in water logging at many places in and around Dhaka city and Chittagong, causing the sufferings to people. "The situation is likely to start improving from tomorrow, with decrease in rainfall," an official of the Met office has said. But it would take few more days to get a clear sky, he added. Meanwhile, the Met office cautioned that gusty weather might affect the country's maritime ports and coastal belt due to the low over North Bay and adjoining coastal areas. Maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted local cautionary signal number three. All fishing boats and trawlers over the North Bay and deep sea have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution till further notice. The Met office also warned people about possible landslide at places in the hilly regions of Chittagong and Sylhet divisions due to the rainfall, reports BSS. ....

Awami League (AL) presidium member Mohammed Nasim said on Tuesday BNP is hatching conspiracy both at national and international levels to foil the next general elections, reports BSS. "BNP never did anything except hatching conspiracy . . . It is doing the same in London right now only to foil the next elections," he told journalists after a meeting of 14-party alliance at the AL president Sheikh Hasina's Dhanmondi political office in the city. Nasim, also health and family welfare minister, alleged BNP is active in the field to hinder various development activities of the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. About the Election Commission's roadmap centering the next parliamentary elections, he said, "We have faith in this independent Election Commission and it will be able to hold the next polls in a free, fair and credible manner." Nasim said the meeting of the alliance decided to distribute relief goods in the flood-affected areas of Chittagong, Feni and northern region of the country. Earlier, the alliance meeting was held with Ganotantrik Party general secretary Shahadot Hossain in the chair. Samyabadi Dal general secretary Dilip Barua, Jatiya Party (JP) secretary general Sheikh Shahidul lslam, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) general secretary Shirin Akhter, AL organising secretaries Ahmed Hossain and Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, relief secretary Sujit Roy Nandi, party's science and technology affairs secretary Abdus Sabur, deputy office secretary Biplob Barua and Bangladesh Tariqat Federation general secretary MA Awal were, among others, present at the meeting.....

A BNP senior leader said on Tuesday his party will have no alternative to movement if there is no dialogue to make the 11th national election a participatory one, reports UNB, BNP vice chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu made the comments while addressing a human chain programme organised by Jatiya Ganotantrik Andolan in front of the National Press Club in the city, protesting 'propaganda' over BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia's ongoing visit to London. "As the opposition, we'll have to choose the path of movement if the government continues its repressive acts, killings and enforced disappearances and ignoring dialogue offer. We'll also have no alternative to movement," he said. "We don't want any movement to have the crisis resolved. We want negotiations. Our first choice is discussion and the second choice is movement or struggle, no matter whatever it is called," Dudu said. He said his party chief went to London to receive medical treatment, but now different types of propaganda are being carried out over her visit. President of Jatiya Ganotantrik Andolan Amir Hossain Badsha presided over the programme.....
