Tangail by-polls begins

Voting in the election to Tangail parliamentary seat (Kalihati), which fell vacant after former Awami League minister Latif Siddique resigned, began on Tuesday morning. The parliamentary seat remains vacant since September 1, 2015 as sacked minister Abdul Latif Siddique quit his parliament membership on the same date. Sources said polls opened at 8:00am and end at 4:00pm without any break across the 107 centers in the Tangail-4 constituency. According to the district election office, a total of 290,055 voters are expected to exercise their franchise in the by-election. Three candidates -- Mohammad Hasan Iman Khan of Awami League, Ataur Rahman Khan of BNF and Imrul Kayes of NPP-- are in the polls race. The former Posts and Telecommunications Minister was dropped from the cabinet and stripped off his membership of the ruling Awami League in October, 2014. He was dropped from the ministry amid a wave of criticisms following his derogatory remarks on hajj and Tabligh Jamaat in the USA on September 28, 2014. Krishak Sramik Janata League president Kader Siddique submitted the nomination paper but after a scrutiny, the returning officer on October 13, 2015, cancelled his nomination paper on charges of loan default. The Krishak Shramik Janata League leader appealed to the Election Commission against the decision, but the commission rejected his plea on October 18. Later, he filed a writ petition with the High Court against the Commission's decision. The HC then directed the Commission on October 21 to accept his candidacy and asked it and the government to explain why the cancellation of his candidature should not be declared illegal.  On February 4, 2016, the HC rejected a writ petition filed by Kader Siddique challenging the legality of the cancellation of his candidature by the Election Commission.  On February 25, 2016, he filed a leave-to-appeal petition with the SC against the High Court order. The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld the High Court order rejecting Krishak Sramik Janata League president Kader Siddique's plea for participating in the Tangail-4 by-election, according to UNB report.....

Student charged with Canada mosque attack

Canadian police on Monday charged a French-Canadian student over the fatal shooting of six Muslim worshippers at a mosque in Quebec. Alexandre Bissonnette faces six counts of first-degree murder and five of attempted murder, reports BBC. The 27-year-old briefly appeared in a Quebec City court over Sunday evening's attack, during evening prayers at the Quebec Islamic Cultural Centre. Vigils have been held across Canada to commemorate those killed and injured. More than 50 people were at the mosque when the shooting erupted just before 20:00 on Sunday. Nineteen people were wounded - all men - and of five people still in hospital, two were in a critical condition. A man of Moroccan heritage who was also arrested after the attack, Mohamed Khadir, is now being treated as a witness. Bissonnette did not enter a plea as he appeared in court on Monday, wearing a white prison-issue jump suit, his hands and feet shackled. The suspect was arrested in his car on a bridge leading from Quebec City to Ile d'Orleans, where he called police to say he wanted to cooperate with the authorities. According to local media, Bissonnette studied political science and anthropology at Laval University, whose campus is about 3km (two miles) away from the mosque. The Montreal Gazette reports that the suspect dressed up as the Grim Reaper for Halloween, according to his Facebook page, which has now been taken offline. On the social network, he also reportedly "liked" US President Donald Trump and French National Front leader Marine Le Pen. Francois Deschamps, an official with an advocacy group, Welcome to Refugees, said the suspect was known for his far-right views. "It's with pain and anger that we learn the identity of terrorist Alexandre Bissonnette, unfortunately known to many activists in Quebec for taking nationalist, pro-Le Pen and anti-feminist positions at Laval University and on social media," Deschamps wrote on organisation's Facebook page.....
