Sand lifting erodes farmland

Illegal sand lifting along the Sonai River at Atua border point of the district has led to the erosion of farmlands in its vicinity. An influential quarter has long been using dredger vessels to lift sand from Baralekha area. During a recent visit, the UNB correspondent found a dredger machine lifting sand at Dhopa Dahar near a BGB camp at Nayagram in Beanibazar. Locals alleged that two local political leaders have been dredging for the last four months illegally. UP chairman of North Shahbazpur Selim Ahmed said the illegal dredging is causing erosion to farmlands. Contacted, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Samir Biswas said legal actions will be taken against the illegal dredging.  ....

Satyarthi\'s stolen Nobel recovered

A replica of a Nobel medal, which was stolen from the home of Indian child rights campaigner Kailash Satyarthi in New Delhi recently, has been recovered, police say. His Nobel certificate as well jewellery and other personal items were also recovered on Sunday, reports BBC. Three people have been arrested. Satyarthi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014 for his work to combat child labour and child trafficking in India. He shared the award with Pakistani child education activist Malala Yousafzai for her work on female education. "I had complete faith in the government, the police and the people of this great nation. I thank the Delhi police for the brilliant and speedy recovery of the items stolen from my residence," Satyarthi was quoted by India Today website as saying. The 63-year-old founded Bachpan Bachao Andolan, or the Save the Childhood Movement, which campaigns for child rights and an end to human trafficking. Satyarthi has long campaigned against child labour and rescued children from servitude. His efforts have seen tens of thousands of children rescued from hazardous industries and rehabilitated.....

Spring sets in

Pahela Falgun, the first day of Spring in the Bengali month of Falgun, is being celebrated across the country today (Monday) in a colourful way with young girls and boys joining various functions wearing dazzling dresses.    Falgun is the eleventh month in the Bengali calendar and the first month of the season, Spring, the king of all the six seasons that brings back warm sunshine, budding flowers and dancing of birds. The first of Falgun is known as Pahela Falgun and usually falls on February 13 of the Gregorian calendar. After the dryness of winter, new leaves start to come out again and the nature adorns the branches with new colorful flowers such as Shimul, Polash and Marigold. Falgun brings joys and colours both in nature and life. Everything in nature gives an impression of youthfulness or freshness, as if the nature takes a new birth.  The festival-loving Bangladeshi people welcome and celebrate this day with great joy, love and in a colourful manner. The blazing red and yellow are the representative colours of the Falgun. Girls are dressed in 'bashonti' (yellow or orange) coloured sarees while boys wear colorful panjabis to welcome the Falgun. A spring festival is being celebrated on the premises of Dhaka University's (DU)'s fine arts faculty, which is the centre of the festival. Besides, thousands of young men and women gathered on the DU campus and the book fair. Jatiya Boshonto Utshab Udjapan Parishad will also arrange the main programmes of the day. Besides, different socio-cultural organisations have chalked out various programmes in the capital and elsewhere to celebrate the day.  ....

Student murder accused held in Jessore

Police arrested the main accused in college student Biplob murder case from Kajirber village in Sharsha upazila under Jessore on Sunday. The arrestee was identified as Raju, 23, son of Miaz Uddin Neda, a resident of Matipukur village of the upazila. Acting on a tip-off, police raided the village in the afternoon and arrested Raju, the principal accused in the murder case, said Murad Hossain, sub-inspector of Sharsha Police Station. The law enforcers also recovered a shutter gun and one bullet from his possession. Nur Hossain Biplob, 18, a 2nd student of Navaran Degree College and vice president of Ulashi union unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League, was beaten to death reportedly by rivals at Navaran in Sharsha upazila on Saturday night. Maniruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Sharsha Police Station, said Shahanur and Hossain, both residents of Jirengachha village, had long been at loggerheads over establishing dominance in the area. As sequel to the problem, supporters of Shahanur group, equipped with lethal weapons, attacked Biplob and beat him up mercilessly, leaving him critically injured. He was admitted to Sharsha upazila health complex where he succumbed to his injures.  ....

Three NU officials held on graft charges

The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) on Monday arrested three officials of the National University (NU), including its deputy registrar and assistant registrar, in a graft case. An ACC team, led by its deputy director Morshed Alam, detained NU proctor and deputy registrar MH Tahid Zaman, its assistant registrar Md Siddiqur Rahman and assistant director Md Mofazzal Hossain from the city's Mirpur area early in the morning, ACC spokesman Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya told news agency UNB. In 2012, a person filed a case against them with a local police station for allegedly causing a loss of about Tk 1.04 crore to the government. According to the case statement, the accused in collusion with each other provided Selection Grade to a number of NU officials violating government rules, which caused a loss of public money of Tk 1.04 crore.....
