Asian shares edge down

Asian stock markets were lower Monday as investors looked ahead to US President Donald Trump's speech to Congress this week for details of promised tax cuts and infrastructure spending. Tokyo's Nikkei 225 index fell 0.7 per cent to 19,152.27 and the Shanghai Composite Index lost 0.3 per cent to 3,244.71. Seoul's Kospi shed 0.2 per cent to 2,090.20. The benchmarks in Southeast Asia retreated. Hong Kong's Hang Seng lost 0.1 per cent to 23,984.70. New Zealand gained and Sydney's S&P-ASX 200 fell 0.3 per cent to 5,724.70. The Dow Jones industrial average extended its winning streak to an 11th day on Friday despite investor unease about uncertainty over Trump's pledge to cut taxes.  The Dow ended up just under 0.1 per cent at 20,821.76. The S&P 500 index rose 0.1 per cent to 2,367.34. The Nasdaq composite rose 0.2 per cent to 5,845.31. Benchmark US crude gained 16 cents to $54.15 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 46 cents on Friday to $53.99.  Brent crude, used to price international oils, added 22 cents to $56.53 in London. It lost 51 cents the previous session. The dollar edged up to 112.23 yen from Friday's 112.19 yen. The euro declined to $1.0566 from $1.0562, according to AP.....

Lucky Akhand ‘in critical state’

Legendary singer-composer Lucky Akhand, diagnosed with lung cancer, is in a 'very bad condition', his family have said quoting doctors. Doctors at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) have lost hope of his recovery, his daughter Mum Minti Akhand Noor said on Sunday night, reports bdnews24.com. "My father's condition is very bad now. The doctors have said it's the last stage. There is nothing to do other than praying for him," she said. Cancer was detected in Akhand's lung in 2015. He was later treated in a Thailand hospital when the freedom fighter-artist received financial help from the prime minister's fund. He was then given chemotherapy in Dhaka. Akhand was a rage in the 1980s, when he doubled up as a singer, lyricist, composer and music director. His first album 'Lucky Akhand' was released by record label Sargam in 1984. "Eiye Neel Monihar", "Amay Deko Na", "Ritiniti Jani Na", "Age Jodi Jantam" and "Sumona" are some songs of this album that made him famous. After his brother Happy Akhand's death in 1987, Lucky withdrew from the music world. Then, after a decade, he hit the stage again in 1998 with two albums "Porichoy Kobe Hobe" and "Bitrishna Jibone Amar". He has been a regular in many live music sessions on television ever since.  ....

US gas price rises nationally

The average price of a gallon of regular-grade gasoline rose 2 cents nationally in United Nation during the past two weeks, to $2.33. Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg said Sunday that the slight rise was due to small increases in crude oil and wholesale gas prices. Lundberg says she expects modest increases in the near-term. The national average is up 56 cents per gallon over the price a year ago. Gas in Los Angeles was the highest in the contiguous United States at an average of $2.94 a gallon Friday. The lowest average was in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at $2.02 per gallon. The US average diesel price is $2.57, up a cent from two weeks ago. A year ago it was $2.07, according to AP.....

Man kills brother over land dispute

A man was stabbed to death allegedly by his younger brother at Gopinathpur Kazipara village in Gopalganj Sadar upazila on Sunday night over a land dispute. The victim was identified as Farid Sarder, 50, son of late Jalil Sarder, a resident of Joynagar village of Kalia upazila in Narail district, reports UNB. Police said Farid and his brother Miraj Sarder, 45, had been at loggerheads over a piece of land. As sequel to the dispute, Farid torched the houses of his brother and sister a few days back. Later, he went into hiding at his cousin's house at Gopinathpur Kazipara village. Miraj along with his two sons Riaz Sikder, 17, Amin Sikder, 11, and his nephew Al Amin, 15, went to his cousin's house around 8:15pm and stabbed Farid indiscriminately, leaving him dead on the spot, the OC added. On information, police recovered the body and sent it to General Hospital. Police, meanwhile, arrested the four alleged killers.....

Bullet-hit body of youth found

The bullet-hit body of an unidentified young man was found near Pakshi Paper Mill in Ishwardi upazila on Monday, reports UNB. Abdul Hye, officer-in-charge of Ishwardi Police Station, said locals spotted the body of the man, aged around 35, with his hands and legs tied up with ropes around 8.30am and informed police. Later, police recovered the body and sent it to Pabna General Hospital morgue.....
