BGB seize gold from bus in Jessore
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel seized 73 tolas of gold from a bus at Amrakhali BGB checkpost in Sarsha upazila of Hessore district on Monday night. Nayeb Subedar Afzal Hossain, commander of the Checkpost, said a team of BGB raided a bus of 'Shouhardo Paribahan' and seized the abandoned gold worth about TK 2.55 million. No one was arrested in this connection, according to UNB report.....

US stocks were lower on Monday amid losses across sectors as investors' appetite for risk was curbed by geopolitical tensions in Asia. The S&P 500 is trading at about 18 times forward earnings estimates against the long-term average of 15 times, according to Thomson Reuters data. Rising geopolitical tensions in East Asia after North Korea fired four ballistic missiles also weighed on global stock markets. At 9:40 am ET (1440 GMT), the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 71.65 points, or 0.34 per cent, at 20,934.06, the S&P 500 was down 11.79 points, or 0.49 per cent, at 2,371.33. The Nasdaq Composite was down 29.37 points, or 0.50 per cent, at 5,841.39. All of the 11 major S&P sectors were lower. Financials, which gained the most in the post-election rally, took the biggest hit. Among stocks, Netflix rose 2.3 per cent to $142.4 after UBS upgraded the stock to "buy" from "neutral". Albemarle was the biggest percentage loser on the S&P, with a 5.0 per cent decline after Citigroup downgraded the lithium producer's stock to "neutral" from "buy". Tyson Foods was down 3.2 per cent at $61.52 after a strain of bird flu was detected in a chicken breeder flock on a Tennessee farm contracted with the company. Declining issues outnumbered advancers on the NYSE by 2,224 to 469. On the Nasdaq, 1,873 issues fell and 521 advanced. The S&P 500 index showed five new 52-week highs and one new low, while the Nasdaq recorded 23 new highs and 19 new lows, according to Reuters.....

An unidentified man died as he fell into an open manhole in the city's Paltan area on Monday, reports UNB. Duty officer Ataur Rahman at Fire Service Central Control Room said the man, aged around 50, fell into the manhole at Culvert road in the evening while walking by it. Locals first tried to rescue him and later they informed the Fire Service after their failure. Later, Fire Service divers rescued the man from the open manhole in an unconscious condition around 6:50pm and took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). The man died at the hospital around 8:00pm, sources at the DMCH said. The manhole was opened as Dhaka Wasa was constructing it, said Ataur.....

A case was filed over Monday's crude bomb attacks on a prison van carrying Mufti Hannan, chief of the banned militant outfit Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami (Huji), and some of his associates at Tongi, reports UNB. Firoz Talukder, officer-in-charge of Tongi Model Police Station, said police on Monday night filed the case under the anti-terrorism act against Mostafa Kamal, held after the attack and 4-5 others. Two crude bombs were hurled at the prison van carrying Mufti Hannan around 5:30pm on Monday while Mufti Hannan and his aides were being taken to Kashimpur jail from a Dhaka court. Later, police arrested Mostafa, 22, hailing from Pagli village in Tarakanda upazila of Mymensingh, from the spot along with a bag containing two patrol bombs, two sound grenades, two crude bombs, and two machetes. The arrested youth reportedly confessed to police that he exploded the bombs targeting the prison van in exchange for Tk 10,000.....
