Data mismatch makes budgetary exercise difficult: Muhith

Finance Minister AMA Muhith, now preparing for authoring the next budget, Tuesday said the data produced by statistical organizations are 'not reliable and conflicting' with other official statistics. "Our statistical data are 'not reliable and conflicting' with other official data--it needs huge improvement," he told reporters after a second pre-budget exchange-of-views meeting with leading economists and professionals at the state guesthouse Padma. The finance minister said the data produced by planning division and statistics division along with other key divisions differ significantly. "I have already formed a committee to look into the matter. It is not difficult to improve. There is a need for coordination among the agencies," he told the meet. He dismissed country's land management as a "total failure" despite the fact that he has been trying in the first and second tenures of the Awami League government to improve upon such a situation. "I have totally failed in this matter," the minister said on a strong note of self-criticism. He echoed the economists' views about promoting multistoried buildings in the villages to save farmlands. Mr Muhith foresees the coming years as risky as protectionism sweeps the world. He said destination of private investment has become questionable, mainly owing to black money. "Private investors are investing their resources abroad," the finance minister told the economists. He noted that country's crop insurance remained neglected. The economists stressed the need for promoting crop insurance. The finance minister said finance information should be detailed about the infrastructure projects. He said economists emphasized detailed public enterprise information in the budget. Admitting his failure about district budget, the finance minister said it was not possible despite his willingness. "There is a need for an administrative reform for successful implementation of district budget," he told the meet. He said there has been discussion about banking commission but nothing concrete has come out yet. Former finance minister M Syeduzzaman, former secretary Dr Tareq, CPD distinguished fellow Debapriya Bhattacharya and Dr. Ahsan H Mansur, among others, attended the meeting.  jasimharoon@yahoo.com, bdsmile@gmail.com....

Home Economics students vow to continue agitation

Students of Home Economics College on Monday vowed to continue their agitation until the demand for recognition of the college as an institute of Dhaka University is met. To press home their demand, they staged a demonstration at the city's New Market intersection blocking it for nearly two hours from 10:45 am, creating traffic congestion on the roads in the area. Vehicular movement remained suspended on the streets of Dhaka University campus, Nilkhet, Azimpur, Kantaban, Science Lab and Elephant Road areas. Commuters were seen walking to their destinations due to nagging traffic jam. Police from Lalbagh and New Market Police Stations rushed to the spot to fend off any untoward incidents there. Officer-in-charge (OC) of New Market Police Station Md Atikur Rahman said police were deployed in the area to ward off untoward incidents. "Policewomen from the reserve unit also came to the spot," he added. Hundreds of protesters carrying placards took to the streets at New Market intersection and chanted slogans against the authority. Ashrafi Toma, a student of the college, said they have been calling on the authority for eight years to meet their demand. "Now we have no alternative but to take to the streets since the college authority is not paying any heed to our demand," she added. One of the organisers and Dhaka metropolitan unit vice president of Bangladesh Student Federation Israt Jahan told the FE that they will continue their agitation today (Tuesday) and announce tougher programmes after discussion with representatives of various departments under the college. "We will stage demo at New Market intersection at 10:00 am on Tuesday." She added: "We will continue staging protests along with other programmes until we get assurance from the authority concerned." Acting principal of the college Prof Fatima Suriya told the FE that they assured the students of conveying their message to the education minister. "A committee has already been formed in this regard. The committee is expected to submit its report to the ministry soon." BGMEA to get 5.5 bighas of land at Uttara to build HQs

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) will get 5.5 bighas of land at Uttara in the city to construct its headquarters. The apex trade body of the garment sector will form several committees mainly to build it in line with laws of the land, sources said. The committees will deal with the design, consultancy, approval and site monitoring, they said adding the BGMEA will form the committees shortly. The move came following the government's confirmation that the Rajdhani Unnayan Katripakkha (Rajuk) will allocate 5.5 bighas of land to the BGMEA for the purpose.  ''We are going to construct our headquarters at Uttara in the city following the government's confirmation about the land,'' BGMEA vice president Mahmud Hasan Khan told reporters on Monday.    He expressed his hope that they would obtain the registration of the land from the RAJUK shortly.
