Air strike on ‘Syria mosque kills 42’

Forty-two people have been killed and many more injured in an air attack on a mosque in a rebel-held village in northern Syria, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Thursday. The raid is said to have taken place in al-Jineh, in Aleppo province. The UK-based observatory, which relays information from sources on the ground in Syria, said the mosque was packed with worshippers for evening prayers. The group said most of those killed were civilians. The village lies in one of the main rebel-held regions of Syria. It is not clear who exactly was behind the attack, but Russian and Syrian war planes fly in the region. US aircraft also target jihadist rebels in the area. The attack came only a day after at least 31 people were killed in a suicide bombing at the main court complex in the capital, Damascus. The Damascus bombing was on the sixth anniversary of the start of the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad. Since then, more than 320,000 people have been killed and 11 million displaced in the conflict, according to activists.....

Man gets death for killing wife

A Khula tribunal on Thursday convicted a man and sentenced him to death for killing his wife in 2010, reports UNB. According to the prosecution, Sheikh Mirajul alias Amanullah, 27, son of Wajed Ali Sheikh of Tungipara in Gopalganj, and his wife Hosne Ara had been living at Natunbazar of the city. On January 28, 2010, the couple locked into an altercation over a family problem, and Mirajul, at one stage, hit his wife with a grinder stone, leaving her dead on the spot. Nannu Shikder, brother of the victim, then filed a case with Sadar Police Station. Police submitted a charge-sheet against Mirajul on February 3, 2011. After examining records and witnesses, Khulna Special Tribunal Judge SM Solaiman handed down the verdict.....

Kushtia \'gunfight\' kills suspected robber

A suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight between his cohorts and DB police at Sehala Adabaria in Doulatpur upazila under Kushtia early Friday. Tipped off that a gang of robbers gathered in the area to commit robberies, a team of DB police had been there around 3:30 am. Sensing the law enforcers' presence, the robbers opened fire on the police, prompting them to retaliate, triggering the gunfight, reports UNB. During the gunfight, Selim Molla, 32, of Madhugari village, suffered bullet wounds. He was taken to Doulatpur Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.  Three policemen were also injured in the gunfight. Selim was wanted in a number of cases, including one of robbery and snatching, said Sabbirul Isalm, officer-in-charge of Kushita DB police. Police could not arrest anyone else as the robbers managed to flee the scene. They also recovered two firearms, two sharp weapons and several bullets from the spot.   ....

Mother, daughter burnt alive

A young housewife and her minor daughter were burnt alive in a fire at their house at East Phulbaria village in Saltha upazila early Friday, reports UNB. Locals said the fire, triggered by electric short-circuit, broke out at the house of Sentu Sheikh early Friday, killing his wife Farida Begum, 25, and their four-year-old daughter Rabeya Begum on the spot. Sentu suffered burn injuries while tried to save his family members, said Aminur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Saltha Police Station. He was admitted to local hospital.....

RU student drowns in pond

A Rajshahi University student drowned in a pond inside Teachers Training College in Rajshahi on Thursday evening, reports UNB. Fahim Hossain, 20, a 1st year student of English Department of the university, drowned in the pond while taking bath around 6:30pm. On information, a firefighting unit rushed in and rescued Fahim, said Omar Faruk, station officer of Rajshahi Fire Service. Fahim, hailing from Jamalpur district, was taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where doctors could not resuscitate him.....
